After reading through a vat full of submissions for best Greek food, I began to wonder if Vancouver Island was once a Greek Island that centuries ago had broken away but had not left its affection for the cuisine of that country behind. Indeed, readers deliciously and enthusiastically described why more than a dozen restaurants serving up delicious Greek fare deserved special recognition; topping the list was Passero's Restaurant in Victoria.
"The Zabaras family run a restaurant with all of the things that we like best about Greece: warm family hospitality with Frank, the owner, greeting patrons at the door and taking time for a visit, Yianoula, his wife, making the very best spanakopita (and we have eaten it all over Greece), succulent lamb dinners and traditional fasolatha (bean soup)," say Joe and Janet Beales. "We always take visiting family and friends to Passero's when they come to see us in Victoria. We love the fact that any number are happily accommodated and that we are welcome to linger, taking as much time as we want to visit, eat and drink at our leisure. So very typical of our memories of Greece."
Reader Phyllis Manchester-Duval agreed that Passero's could take you, at least for an evening, on a journey to this Mediterranean country.
"One taste of the melt-in-your-mouth kalamari and you are transported to the sea-side of the Greek Isles, buying your fish fresh from the local fishboat," says Manchester-Duval, adding that beyond the great food, if you've never been to Greece the restaurants tables surrounded by artifacts and images will give you a feel of what it's like.
